MTS Nursing/AHP bursaries 2025

MTS are proud to announce the first recipients of the MTS bursaries for nursing staff and allied health professionals. We would like to offer our thanks to all who applied, and congratulations to the successful applicants – Megan Walton, Annwen Griffith Thomas, and Claire Walker, who have each been awarded a bursary of £500 in addition to a year’s membership of MTS, to be used for education or research purposes.

This year’s winners have told us a bit about themselves, and how the bursary will impact their practice and patient care:

Name: Annwen Griffith Thomas
Role: Respiratory CNS
How will you use the award/what impact will it have?
My Role as Respiratory CNS in the West Midlands is varied, from seeing patients with Asthma/COPD to arranging Home Oxygen for Patients, Initiating Patient on CPAP and Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV)  machines. The MTS bursary has enabled me to enroll on a 2 day NIV Course, this will provide me with the Practical Skills and Underpinning Knowledge that I can provide to Patients in the hospital needing NIV Intervention.

Name: Megan Walton
Role: Clinical Physiologist
How will you use the award/what impact will it have?

In my job role, I regularly perform respiratory diagnostic tests for patients across University Hospitals Birmingham. Referrals come from a range of specialties and care settings, and a huge part of my role is being able to report on tests in a way that is clear and concise for everyone to understand. With the help of the Midlands Thoracic Society, I will be able to attend the Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) Lung Function Reporting course to better improve the reporting of lung function at my centre and across the region.

Name: Claire Walker
Role: ILD Specialist Physiotherapist
How will you use the award/what impact will it have?

To attend a virtual school on living and dying with chronic lung disease. The knowledge gained from this course will help to inform development of a specialist ILD inpatient in-reach service, providing specialist care to patients admitted with acute exacerbations of ILD. The aim of this service would be to improve patient experience based on disease specific best practice aimed at supporting both optimal living and end- of- life care. This will enhance patient experience during their hospital admission and result in improved symptom management and functional status on discharge, improving patients quality of life and reducing the risk of readmission to hospital.

Congratulations again to all our award winners, and we look forward to hearing back from them later in the year about what they have learned and how it is improving care for patients in the West Midlands.

The bursaries are open to all nursing and allied health professional colleagues, and will run again in Spring 2026. More details on how to apply will be advertised again closer to the time.
